Background
Origin & History
Despite the name, Roter Veltliner is not related to Grüner Veltliner. DNA work shows it to be a founder of a whole Austrian family: it is a parent of Neuburger (with Sylvaner) and of Rotgipfler (with Savagnin), and probably of Zierfandler, though that last link is less certain. It is grown mainly in the Wagram and Kamptal areas of Lower Austria, where it makes full, spicy dry whites.
