Background
Origin & History
DNA profiling showed that Torrontés Riojano is a cross of Muscat of Alexandria and Listán Prieto, known in Argentina as Criolla Chica, which means it arose in the New World from two grapes brought by the Spanish. Its Muscat parent gives its floral perfume. It is unrelated to the Torrontés of Galicia.
The most admired wines come from the very high vineyards around Cafayate in Salta, where cool nights keep the wines fresh. It is best drunk young, with the perfume of roses and peach and a dry palate.
