Geography

Shaded areas are the state, province or département(s) containing each region, so they run wider than the appellations themselves.

Spain

Ribeiro (Galicia)

The leading white of Ribeiro, on granite terraces above the Miño, Avia and Arnoia, usually blended with Godello, Loureiro, Torrontés or Albariño.

Rías Baixas (Galicia)

One of the white grapes permitted alongside Albariño, mostly in the warmer inland Condado do Tea subzone, where wines labelled Condado do Tea must be at least 70% Albariño and Treixadura together.

Background

Origin & History

Treixadura is native to the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula, along the valley of the Miño, which divides Galicia from northern Portugal. Where it began is debated. Across the border, in the Vinho Verde region, it is grown as Trajadura, and a recent study of Galician grapes found no link to the main Galician families but a first-degree relationship with the Portuguese variety Batoca. That study points towards the Vinho Verde side, but it does not settle the origin, and no parent line is drawn for it on the family-tree map.

Its home in Spain is Ribeiro, in the province of Ourense, whose wines were fetching high prices in the markets of Santiago de Compostela as early as the 12th century. The grape nearly disappeared in the 20th century and was revived from the 1980s by growers such as Emilio Rojo and Luis Anxo Rodríguez. It is a late-ripening vine, and the wines tend to be fresh, medium in body and , and made to drink young, though some producers age them on their . It is also one of the white grapes permitted in Rías Baixas.
