Background

Origin & History

Zierfandler, also called Spätrot, is probably a cross of Roter Veltliner and a relative of Savagnin, but its parentage has not been settled: a 1998 study found no close relationship between Zierfandler and Rotgipfler, whose parents were long assumed to be the same, so no parent is drawn for it on the lineage map. It is grown almost entirely in the Thermenregion south of Vienna, and is often blended with Rotgipfler.
