Overview
About Waipara Valley
The Waipara Valley is in North Canterbury, about 45 kilometres north of Christchurch, in a basin sheltered from the cold Pacific easterlies by the Teviotdale hills. It is the most important wine district in Canterbury, and its best-known wines are Riesling and Pinot Noir, with Chardonnay and Pinot Gris also grown.
The valley has two kinds of ground. The Omihi Hills, on the eastern side, are limestone-rich and give tightly structured wines, while the gravelly river terraces, such as the Glasnevin Gravels, are freer-draining. It is a region of family-owned wineries, several of which have been among New Zealand's best-regarded for Pinot Noir.
Waipara Valley is marked on the map.
