A focused 3-stop route through Hungary
The character of this trip
Old names, newly rediscovered
Hungary's wine story has two halves: the ancient, in Tokaj's sweet Aszú and Eger's Bull's Blood, and a recent revival after decades of state control. The route runs from the volcanic hills of the north-east, past cellars cut into soft tuff, to the shores of Lake Balaton. Order what the locals pour, and expect grapes whose names are hard to say and easy to like.
A focused route through what's currently documented
Hungary has 3 places mapped on Ampelos so far. The route below draws on the ones within reach of each other — enough for a short, honest route rather than a full itinerary — and will grow as more of the country is documented.
