A focused 3-stop route through South Africa

The character of this trip

Mountains, two oceans and the Cape's old vines

The Cape's wine country is compact, set between mountains and two oceans. Within about two hours of Cape Town, you can go from the historic estates of Stellenbosch to old-vine Swartland to the cool coast at Walker Bay, tasting Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Syrah and Pinot Noir on the way. The scenery matters as much as the wine: Cape Dutch farmhouses, mountain passes and, in season, whales off Hermanus.

A focused route through what's currently documented

South Africa has 3 places mapped on Ampelos so far. The route below draws on the ones within reach of each other — enough for a short, honest route rather than a full itinerary — and will grow as more of the country is documented.
