Collio
Cool maritime to continental
Hillside vineyards on the Slovenian border making some of Italy's most precise whites, and the cradle of the modern skin-contact 'orange wine' revival.
Overview
About Collio
Collio's hills straddle the border with Slovenia (where the same vineyards continue as the Goriška Brda wine district), on a soil the locals call ponca — a crumbly marl and sandstone that growers credit for the wines' mineral drive. Friulano is the signature white, alongside Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio.
Around the hamlet of Oslavia, growers including Josko Gravner and Stanko Radikon revived extended skin-contact fermentation for white wine from the 1990s on — ageing juice on its skins for weeks or months, often in amphorae — helping launch what's now called the 'orange wine' movement well beyond Friuli.
Collio is marked on the map.

Shaded: Gorizia. Map units are states, provinces or départements, so a smaller place appears as the larger area that contains it.

Climate & terroir
Climate
Cool maritime to continental
Cooled by the nearby Alps and moderated by the Adriatic, with large day-night swings that help preserve aromatic freshness in the whites.
Terroir & soils
What the vines grow in
Ponca: a layered, crumbly Eocene marl and sandstone that erodes easily and drains well, unique to this corner of Friuli and neighbouring Slovenia.
