Overview

About Hungary

Hungary has 22 wine regions, from the volcanic hills of Tokaj in the north-east to Villány and Szekszárd in the south, and Lake Balaton in the west. Its wine history goes back to Roman times, and the sweet wines of Tokaj were prized by European courts.

It grows a wide mix of native and imported grapes. Furmint and Hárslevelű are the leading whites of Tokaj, and Kékfrankos, the local name for Blaufränkisch, leads the reds, including the Egri Bikavér of Eger.

How the wines are classified

Hungarian wine follows the European PDO and PGI system, with named regions and sub-regions.

  1. PDO (OEM)

  2. PGI (OFJ)
