Rioja Alavesa

Continental, with Atlantic influence

A small, hilly, cool subzone in the Basque province of Álava, prized for perfumed, fine-grained Tempranillo from high-altitude plots.

Overview

About Rioja Alavesa

North of the Ebro river and administratively part of the Basque Country's Álava province, Rioja Alavesa is the smallest and one of the coolest of Rioja's three zones, its vineyards climbing the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria. Small, often family-run plots and a cooler mesoclimate have made it a focus for growers chasing single-vineyard, -driven wine over the traditional blended- model, alongside long-established cooperatives and estates.

Rioja Alavesa is marked on the map.

Spain

Shaded: Álava. Map units are states, provinces or départements, so a smaller place appears as the larger area that contains it.
