Vienna
Continental, with Pannonian warmth
One of the few capitals with a working wine region inside its limits, known for field-blend white wine and hillside wine taverns.
Overview
About Vienna
Vienna has several hundred hectares of vineyards within its city limits, on the slopes of the Vienna Woods and the hills of Nussberg and Bisamberg, and it is one of the few capital cities in the world that still makes wine on a serious scale. Its signature wine is Wiener Gemischter Satz, a white made from at least three grape varieties planted and harvested together in the same vineyard, which became Vienna's first DAC in 2013.
Viennese wine culture centres on the Heuriger, a tavern where growers serve their own wine with simple food. The tradition dates from 1784, when Emperor Joseph II decreed that winegrowers could sell their own wine and food. The villages of Grinzing, Nussdorf, Neustift am Walde and Stammersdorf are the best known, and the city's tram and bus lines reach most of them.
Vienna is marked on the map.

The land
Climate & terroir
Climate
Continental, with Pannonian warmth
Warm, dry summers and cold winters, with cool air from the Vienna Woods and the moderating influence of the Danube. Autumns are long and sunny, which suits late-ripening white grapes.
Terroir & soils
What the vines grow in
Limestone-rich soils and loess on the slopes of the Vienna Woods, Nussberg and Bisamberg, which give the wines their fresh acidity and mineral edge.
