Croatia

Continental and Mediterranean

A country of two wine worlds, continental Slavonia and the Adriatic coast, with a wealth of local grapes and the homeland of the grape known in California as Zinfandel.

Overview

About Croatia

Croatia's vineyards fall into two main zones: the continental north and east, around Slavonia and Zagorje, which make mostly white wines from Graševina (Welschriesling) and others, and the coast and islands, from Istria to Dalmatia, where red Plavac Mali and whites such as Malvazija Istarska and Pošip are the leaders.

It is the birthplace of Tribidrag, or Crljenak Kaštelanski, identified as the original of California's Zinfandel and Italy's Primitivo, and of Plavac Mali, the descendant of Zinfandel and Dobričić.
