Arka plan
Köken ve tarih
Gouais Blanc likely originated in the Balkans and spread across medieval Europe with Roman and Germanic migration, becoming a common vineyard grape from Austria to the Loire by the Middle Ages. It was never respected — high-yielding and rustic, it was considered wine for peasants, and French authorities periodically tried to restrict or ban it in favor of supposedly nobler varieties like Pinot Noir.
Its quiet revenge came centuries later. DNA profiling published by John Bowers and Carole Meredith in 1999 revealed that Gouais Blanc, planted haphazardly alongside Pinot Noir in medieval vineyards, was one parent of an astonishing number of modern varieties — Chardonnay, Gamay, Aligoté, and Melon de Bourgogne among them — making this disrespected workhorse grape one of the most important ancestors in the history of European viticulture.
