The character of this trip
Wine country you can reach by tram
Few countries keep wine so close to daily life: Vienna's taverns are inside the city, the Wachau's terraces above the Danube make an easy day trip, and Burgenland is a short hop east. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling on the terraces, field-blend whites in the capital, Blaufränkisch and sweet wines in the east. It rewards a taste for precision and company, since much of the wine is poured by the family that grew it.
A focused route through what's currently documented
Austria has 3 places mapped on Ampelos so far. The route below draws on the ones within reach of each other — enough for a short, honest route rather than a full itinerary — and will grow as more of the country is documented.
