Beaujolais lies between Mâcon and Lyon, and is often grouped with Burgundy for administrative and marketing purposes even though its grape, Gamay, and its wines are quite different. Most is simple Beaujolais or Beaujolais-Villages, but the ten Crus — Saint-Amour, Juliénas, Chénas, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Régnié, Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly — make wines with real structure and depth that can age.
Much Beaujolais is made by whole-cluster or semi-carbonic maceration, which brings out bright, bubblegum-and-red-berry fruit and keeps tannins soft. Beaujolais Nouveau, released on the third Thursday of November, is the region's best-known — and most misleading — wine.
