Fransa
Varied: maritime to Mediterranean
The reference point for the world's wine regions — home of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne, and the model for appellation-based classification.

Fransa hakkında
France is one of the world's largest wine producers, and few countries have shaped how wine is understood as much. Its appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) system, formalised in 1935, ties a wine's name to a defined place, grape list and set of production rules, and became the template for protected designations of origin across Europe.
Wine is made in almost every part of the country, from the cool northern vineyards of Champagne and Alsace to the sun-baked Mediterranean south. French regions are, for the most part, named after places rather than grapes, so a bottle of Chablis or Chinon tells you where it is from and leaves the variety — Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc — to be learned.

İklim ve terroir
İklim
Varied: maritime to Mediterranean
Oceanic in the west and north, continental in the east (Alsace, Burgundy, Champagne) and Mediterranean in the south. That spread is why France can ripen everything from lean sparkling-wine grapes to heat-loving Grenache.
Terroir ve topraklar
Asmaların yetiştiği zemin
Exceptionally varied geology: limestone and marl in Burgundy and Champagne, gravel in Bordeaux's Médoc, granite in Beaujolais and the northern Rhône, schist in the Languedoc, and the soft tuffeau limestone of the Loire.

Şarapların sınıflandırılması
French wine is labelled by place first. The tighter the place and the stricter the rules, the higher the tier.
AOC / AOP
Appellation d'origine contrôlée, the top tier. Fixes the area, grape varieties, yields and methods; the wine is named for the place, not the grape.
IGP
Indication géographique protégée (formerly Vin de Pays). Broader areas and looser rules, and the grape may be named, as with Pays d'Oc.
Vin de France
No region on the label, only the country, though the grape and vintage may be shown.

Bölgeler
Alsace
A dry, sunny strip in the Vosges rain shadow, known for aromatic single-variety whites — Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat.
Beaujolais
The granite hills south of Burgundy where Gamay makes light, juicy reds, from Nouveau to ten age-worthy Cru villages.
Bordeaux
The world's most celebrated fine-wine region, on the Gironde estuary, known for Cabernet Sauvignon- and Merlot-led red blends and sweet Sauternes.
Burgundy
Home of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, where centuries of monastic vineyard mapping produced the world's most terroir-obsessed appellation hierarchy.
Champagne
France's northerly sparkling-wine appellation, where Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grown on chalk are turned into wine by the traditional method.
Jura
A cool, mountainous region on the Swiss border, known for Vin Jaune, made from Savagnin under a veil of yeast, and unusual reds from Poulsard and Trousseau.
Languedoc-Roussillon
France's vast Mediterranean south: historically bulk wine, now a laboratory for Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre blends.
Loire Valley
France's longest river valley: a cool-climate garden of Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Melon de Bourgogne, from the Atlantic to the heart of France.
Rhône Valley
Two contrasting halves along one river: steep, Syrah-dominant terraces in the north and sun-baked Grenache-based blends in the south.
Savoie
Alpine vineyards around the lakes and mountains of south-eastern France, for light, high-acid whites from Jacquère and Altesse, and reds from Mondeuse.
South-West France
A patchwork of little-known appellations between Bordeaux and the Pyrenees, from Cahors's Malbec to Madiran's Tannat and Gaillac's local grapes.
