Rioja Alta lies in the west of the region, around the town of Haro, at the highest average altitude of Rioja's three subzones and closest to the cooling influence of the Atlantic. It's historically the source of the region's most age-worthy, traditionally styled wines, and home to some of Rioja's oldest bodegas, several of them clustered around Haro's 19th-century railway station district.

Tipik stil: Perfumed and fine-grained, increasingly bottled as single-vineyard wine

Rioja Oriental

Toprak: Alluvial and ferrous clay, warmer and drier, furthest from the Atlantic
Baskın üzümler: Garnacha thrives alongside Tempranillo
Tipik stil: Riper and fuller-bodied, with higher alcohol than the other two zones
